Sustainable Style: How to Host a Clothing Swap

Sustainability is chic! I’ve been practicing sustainability as much as possible in my life and during my travels. One of the more exciting ways I like to do this is with Clothing Swap events. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Americans spent an average of $1,833 on apparel in 2017. That’s about $152 a month.

As a fat person it’s difficult to shop for clothing, but it’s nearly impossible when I’m traveling. I’m also a Digital Nomad which means I don’t have a home base, I’m constantly on the road and I take everything I own with me. So before I leave a country I host a small clothing swap to let go of some of the pre-worn things I no longer need. Making space for anything I purchased during my trip, and avoiding extra luggage fees.

I host fat positive trips and events for my Fat Girls Traveling Community and clothing swaps are always on the itinerary. As marginalized people we often feel left out when shopping with friends and have a difficult time finding things in our size. These clothing swaps are an opportunity to finally feel included while minimizing our impact on the environment.

Did you know:

  • It takes over 700 gallons of water to make a single t-shirt. That’s the amount of water you would drink in 3 years.

  • It takes over 1,800 gallons of water to make a pair of jeans. That’s the amount of water you would drink in 7 years.

  • The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the average person throws away 81 pounds of clothing every year. Although most of these items can be reused, most end up in a landfill.

The fact is, we’re buying more than we need. More than the earth can provide. Clothing swaps help minimize waste and while it’s a small act, it has a huge impact on the environment. I have worked in the fashion industry for over a decade and some of my best finds have been vintage dresses and heirloom jewelry.

Do you want some tips on how to host a Virtual Clothing Swap with friends? Do you miss thrifting and treasure hunting? Here are my suggestions on safe ways to share or shop for pre-loved clothing during the Covid19 pandemic.

Virtual Clothing Swap Suggestions

*Do not participate in a clothing swap if you think you might be COVID-positive.

Clothing swaps are generally free or low cost events. However, since we’re still staying safe at home and avoiding groups I suggest that you start a Swap Group with friends who wear similar sizes. From there you can create a group text thread or private Facebook Group where you can share photos of the things you’re willing to swap.

Tip #1: Wash items before you ship them.

Tip #2:  Discuss shipping fees (who pays, when).

Tip #3:  Wash items as soon as you receive them.

Checklist for a Virtual Clothing Swap

  • Post a photo of the item, preferably a photo of yourself or a model wearing it.

  • Only share one item per photo unless it’s a set.

  • Post the size of the garment.

  • Post the condition of the garment and specify any damages or defects.

  • Post the brand / label of the garment. Brands use different size specifications.

I want to challenge us all to focus on buying pre-loved items for the rest of the year. You can refresh your closet by shopping a friend's closet! Being green is glam, being sustainable is chic! So who’s a size 20 and wants to join my Swap Group?
